Securus Technologies is the industry leader when it comes to prison technology. The company provides a wide array of different technological solutions for correctional institutions across the United States. In fact, at the present time, Securus Technologies reports that it provides services to over 2,600 correctional facilities in the United States.
Securus Technologies was founded in the 1980s and is based in Dallas, Texas. The company is constantly expanding and increasing the number of solutions that it provides to correctional departments and institutions in North America.
Rick Smith, the Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Securus Technologies, reports that the company comes up with a new product or service each week. He goes on to note that these new solutions are designed to help law enforcement and correctional officers solve crimes.
The reality is that crimes occur not only in the “real world,” but also inside correctional institutions as well. An exampled of a Securus Technologies technological solution designed to assist in detecting potential criminal activity in a correctional facility is the Securus Technologies inmate telephone system.
The head of a correctional institution recently reported on how the Securus Technologies inmate telephone system helped identify a corrupt staff member at the correctional facility. The staff member was intent on bringing contraband into the institution and delivering it to an inmate.
Thanks to the Securus Technologies inmate phone system, a warrant was obtained following the collection of evidence through an appropriate monitoring of certain phone calls. Armed with the warrant, evidence was collected that demonstrated the staff member intended to introduce contraband into the institution. He was arrested and now faces criminal prosecution.
Contraband introduced into a correctional facility includes everything from drugs to mobile phones. Stopping the flow of contraband is a major objective for correctional institutions in the United States.
As the holidays near, many inmates will feel the deep sense of depression brought on by not being able to spend the holidays with their families. This can be especially hard for newer inmates spending their first Christmas in prison. Traditionally, the only way an inmate could see his family, friends or spouse would be for them to physically come to the prison and visit the inmate in person. Many still opt for this despite the many serious problems associated with in-person visits. However, the costs and headaches of driving to and entering the prison often times meant that inmates simply went without seeing their loved ones for Christmas.
With the advent of Securus video visitation, this is rapidly changing. The incarcerated can now spend almost unlimited time with their families through a virtual visitation system that provides an ultra-high quality video feed and voice-over-internet protocol. This is changing the lives of many inmates. And veteran prison staff has even reported a decreased incidence of violence around the holiday season as compared with decades past.
Despite all the clear benefits of video visitation, some detractors of this great new technology have continued trotting out false bogeymen that they claim prove its inefficacy. Securus Technologies recognizes the vast importance of this innovative means of communication and has thus vigorously defended its use from misinformed and ignorant critics.
Video visitation makes prisons safer
Data shows that prisons which have installed Securus video visitation systems have a lower incidence of violence and higher rates of inmate compliance. There is no mystery here. Inmates who can stay connected with the outside world and the lives that they will someday return to maintain a sense of hope and purpose that keeps them going, even in the ugly face of the daily prison grind. As any corrections officer will tell you, inmates who lose all hope are among the gravest threats faced by correctional institutions. Any measure which can palpably lift the average psychological health of an institution’s inmates is going to have myriad positive effects on the overall order and efficiency of that prison. Video visitation, with its ability to keep inmates nearly constantly connected with friends and loved ones, offers perhaps the greatest innovation in inmate mental health in decades.
But it’s not all about the inmates either. Family members often feel like they are doing the time right alongside their loved one. Video visitation alleviates some of the stress that families face while their incarcerated kin are physically absent from their lives. And at no time is this truer than over the holidays.
That is to say that, specifically, there are times in which families will have to endure the hardship of a loved one being incarcerated for one reason or another. During the incarceration period of a family member or friend, time does not stop by any means and shows absolutely no mercy to those affected by such a tragedy; however, Securus Technologies has implemented a way beyond traditional inmate visitation for families and friends to remain in contact with their loved ones who are in jail. Securus Technologies offers the unprecedented options of live video visitation and “jail voicemail” to friends and family of inmates. This is invaluable to inmates who have children and/or wives and the families thereof, because there are times when physical visitation at a jail is simply impractical or altogether impossible. These families who are unable to visit their loved ones are now able to not only hear the voices of the people they care most about, but also to see their faces and surroundings outside of jail. In many ways, Securus Technologies has developed possibilities only before tangible in the dreams of homesick inmates.
A demonstration video depicts an inmate utilizing Securus’s video visitation service to see his family at home in their living room singing “Happy Birthday“. The fact that the inmate is able to participate in the occasion feels momentous simply in viewing. The inmate proceeds to vocalize that he is utterly “overwhelmed” by being able to see and hear his family even though he is in jail.
The possibilities stemming from the work of Securus Technologies are endless; however, it is logical to believe that the ability to participate in occasions such as this over video visitation with family, friends and other loved ones will serve to invigorate inmates with the feelings of love and happiness, thus promoting good behavior and overall functionality as a result of the profound incentive of being physically present with those same loved ones sooner than later.
Services offered by Securus Technologies have changed and will continue to forever change the stigma and overall reception of incarceration and the visitation and communication associated with it. Inmates will never feel as separated and distant from those they love and cherish while in jail or prison as long as Securus Technologies is present to care for their emotional and mental health by offering what has for so long been denied to them.
